Jets Shouldn't Sign Free Agent WR
The New York Jets shouldn’t sign a WR in free agency in the upcoming offseason after extending Garrett Wilson this past offseason.
Here’s the Garrett Wilson contract, via Over The Cap.
The Jets want to draft their franchise quarterback in Round 1 this draft. If the Jets finally hit on a quarterback, his big cap numbers won’t hit until at least 2031. If they draft a wide receiver in Round 2, his big cap hits won’t hit until 2032. Both of those will be just in time for a new contract for Wilson.
The Jets could have Wilson’s big third contract not hit until 2033 with an extension in 2030. If the Jets sign a veteran this offseason, it will likely be a short-term move. Then, they have to hope to hit in the draft anyway.
The Jets have Breece Hall, a growing Mason Taylor, Garrett Wilson, and hopefully a young player in the 2026 NFL Draft who can gain something by having the others around him and creating favorable matchups.
The Jets also traded for John Metchie III. If he turns out to be a viable option, especially for depth, he’s a restricted free agent. So, the Jets could have some experience and a temporary WR2 while the draft pick is growing. He will be a cheap option (via OTC).
Ultimately, the Jets should trust their coaches to develop players, and the cap situation is better suited for a draft pick than a veteran. So, the Jets need to go into the draft looking for a quarterback and a wide receiver.
